Discover Our Story
Plasticity Theatre Troupe (PTT) is a Penang-based contemporary shadow performances troupe founded in 2015.
United by a shared commitment to environmental sustainability, the troupe uses art as a medium to promote environmentally conscious ways of living and to encourage reflection on humanity's relationship with nature. By transforming discarded materials and everyday objects into artistic elements, PTT creates works through the interplay of light, shadow, movement, and storytelling. Through its approach to contemporary shadow performance, the troupe engages audiences with environmental and social issues while demonstrating the creative potential of reuse and resourcefulness.
Despite staging a theatrical show, the troupe also develops educational and community engagement initiatives through workshops that explore environmental awareness using shadow play, visual arts, and daily life materials and objects. The troupe has also expanded its artistic practice into installation art, exploring shadow play beyond the stage and transforming light, shadow, space, and reused materials into immersive experiences that invite audiences to engage with environmental and social themes in new ways.

During its founding year in 2015, Plasticity Theatre Troupe produced its first work 'Plastic City' that explores environmental issues. Since then, the production has been presented in theatres, community halls, cafés, schools, and festivals across Malaysia and internationally, including Taiwan, Macau, Singapore, and Thailand. In 2025, the troupe celebrated the 10th anniversary of 'Plastic City' with a special edition presentation at Hin Between Festival, marking a decade of artistic exploration, community engagement, and environmental storytelling.
In early 2019, an international collaborative work was done between Plasticity Theatre Troupe and Sutarath Sinnong from Homemade Puppet (Thailand), called 'The Present'. This production focuses on today's present world, which has been largely polluted and destroyed by human beings. This production also intended to remind the audiences that our earth is a present given to all living life and no one should take it for granted.
Right after the international collaborative work, in late 2019, the team started another collaborative production that touches on the issues of death and abuse in custody. This work in progress production 'Di Luar Bayangan' (Out of the Shadow) is a collaboration with Malaysia human rights NGO (SUARAM Penang and Eliminating Deaths and Abuse in Custody Together (EDICT)). However, the project was temporarily put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these challenges, the work continued to evolve and was eventually presented in its full-length form, premiering at the Freedom Film Festival (Penang) in 2022.
